Five reasons why you need a personal trainer.

1. You lack a plan of attack

Congratulations, you've made it to the gym, but what do you do now? This conundrum happens to us all, but mainly to those new to the gym. You'll be more successful in your workouts if you have a workout program, and you'll be more productive with your time in the gym.

A personal trainer will not only create a program for you, but they will help get you comfortable in the gym and show you how to use our equipment safely. We don't believe in gate-keeping the gym floor and want to ensure you feel confident in our spaces.

2. You want an experienced professional

Did you know that CSEP-certified trainers are continuously learning? It's true. It's a requirement for us to stay certified every year. We're all degreed professionals who have demonstrated core competencies through challenging the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology exams. So not only are our personal trainers some of the best-educated trainers to work with, but we're also continually updating our skills and knowledge.

3. You need accountability

Sometimes, you lack someone counting on you to show up, someone who wants to see you succeed, and someone who will celebrate the small and big wins with you.

Consistency is a crucial piece when it comes to working out. You'll see change and feel better if you're making it to the gym regularly, and having a standing appointment with your personal trainer helps many people stick to the plan.

4. You've hit a wall

Maybe that new year, new you motivation has abandoned you, or perhaps you've plateaued in your training program and aren't seeing results. Consulting with a personal trainer can get you back on track to overcome some of those barriers. Unless that barrier is a literal wall. That might be out of our scope of practice.

5. You have big goals

We like big goals! But we know we can't achieve big goals on our own. Let us be your sensei. A skill set our personal trainers often use, even secretly, is breaking down your big goals into smaller goals so you can see short-term wins that keep you motivated and helps build a foundation to achieve the larger ones. We are also knowledgeable about safe workout progressions to get you there, which in the long term will save you a lot of time and hassle, as well as potential injury.

If any of these reasons resonate with you, maybe it's time to consult with one of our personal trainers. Learn more about Personal Training at the UM.
