Our Personal Training Philosophy – Client Focused, Research-Based, & Attainable.

by Adam Toffan, M.Sc, NSCA-CSCS, CSEP-CPT Assistant Fitness Training and Assessment Coordinator, Recreation Services at the University of Manitoba

What's our philosophy and how do we differ from others?

  • Client Focused: No Gimmicks.
  • Scientific: Research-Driven Programs.
  • Attainable Goals: Challenging but Realistic.

Client Centered
There are countless approaches to personal training. Some trainers/facilities focus more on efficiency and gimmicks. This could lead to the client receiving training not specific to their goals, with strategies that make a workout seem more beneficial than it actually is. In comparison, our programming is client focused with each client receiving a completely original program designed specifically for them. You're not going to find pre-made workout templates or cookie cutter programs here – and that's a good thing.

"We use only successfully demonstrated scientific principles when developing a program"

Scientific
Our training is also evidence based. We use the most recent research to guide our programming, and don't provide our clients exercises/workouts based on trends without scientific backing. Some trainers believe their clients need to leave a workout session feeling sore and exhausted crippled to have gotten their money’s worth. However, depending on your training goals, this might not be necessary or even beneficial. We use only successfully demonstrated scientific principles when developing a program for our clients to ensure they achieve their goals without harming their bodies in the process.

Attainable Goals
The key to success with a training program is having enough of a challenge while also being attainable as to not discourage you. A program needs to challenge you in order to help you achieve your goals. If your body is not faced with a significant stimulus, you won't see or feel results. However, the program needs to be realistic with smaller goals along the way. Safe and timely progressions that help you make steps towards your goals and build confidence as you see your fitness reach new levels.
